How much BAföG will I get?
The monthly amount you get in BAföG is calculated according to a specified needs-based rate and your chargeable income and assets, the income of your spouse or partner and/or your parents. If the amounts are below specified exemption limits, you are entitled to receive the maximum BAföG rate; otherwise you will receive a percentage of it.
From August 2019, the maximum BAföG rate is calculated as follows:
|Living with parents||Not living with parents*|
|Basic requirements||474 €||744 €|
|Health insurance allowance||84 €||84 €|
|Health insurance allowance (30 and up)||155 €**||155 €**|
|Long-term care insurance allowance||25 €||25 €|
|Long-term care insurance allowance (30 and up)||34 €**||34 €**|
|Possible total amount||583 €||663 €**||853 €||933 €**|
* The apartment may not be a (rental) property of the parents. An apartment is a property of the parents if they hold at least a 50% share.
** The health insurance supplements may vary on a case-by-case basis. The figures listed here are the maximum possible amounts.
If you care for your own children, your total eligibility will increase by the childcare allowance (140 EUR) per child.
The applicant’s income and assets as well as the income of the spouse or partners and/or of the biological parents will be counted against the applicant’s individually calculated needs.
Calculating BAföG eligibility is a highly complex, case-by-case process. For that reason, we cannot list any definitive income limits here. The best way to found out how much BAföG you are eligible to receive is simply to file your application!
