Your Position:

What are the MensaCup and ThermoCup?

Change the way you drink: Reusable is the new disposable!

According to the environmental agency Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), near 320,000 disposable cups are used per hour in Germany alone! That means that each year some three billion cups are thrown away – and each one is used on average only 15 minutes.

The sale of hot beverages in disposable cups in our canteens and cafeterias is contributing to the growth of this mountain of waste. In the long-term, this wastefulness is not compatible with our corporate philosophy, which, in addition to appreciation and community, places great value on sustainability.

The MensaCup

Starting winter semester 2017/2018, you can buy the MensaCup in all Studentenwerk Dresden canteens and cafeterias. Made by the company Ornamin, the MensaCup has many ecological advantages. A low manufacturing temperature of 200 °C means the energy-saving starts in production! For comparison: glass has a manufacturing temperature of 800 °C, porcelain 1000 °C. Glas 800°C, Porzellan 1.000°C) kann bereits bei der Herstellung Energie gespart werden.

And due to its low weight, the MensaCup requires fewer resources during transportation than glass or porcelain. Another central argument for the use of plastic reusable products is the material’s resistance to breaking. Products of this kind are highly durable and can also be recycled at the end of their service life – this is not the case with porcelain nor all types of glass.

Simply put – the MensaCup is:

  • Light
  • Highly stable
  • Break-proof (quality BPA-free plastic)
  • Microwave-safe
  • Dishwasher-safe
  • Made in Germany

The ThermoCup

At the end of May 2018, the ThermoCup joined the Studentenwerk family of reusable items. Unlike the MensaCup, the ThermoCup can keep your drink warm for a prolonged time. So if you want not just to enjoy your coffee on the way to campus but want it to be hot even after your lecture has ended, we “warmly” recommend the ThermoCup.

  • Handy and light
  • Leakproof
  • Made of BPA-free plastic and tasteless stainless steel
  • A product of the Dresden company CupTrends, manufatured in China by a company certified per environmental and social standards
