Question: What is the deposit for?
Answer:The deposit serves as security and has to be paid before the contract is signed. Detailed information (bank account number and amount of the monthly rent) will be provided with the confirmation that you have been allocated a room in a student hall. (International students are advised to pay the deposit in cash or by cash/credit card on the day of their arrival in the Studentenwerk. Please do not transfer any money from abroad as banks charge high transaction fees.) No interest will be paid on the deposit (after section 551, paragraph 3 German Civil Code) which is usually paid back approximately 10 weeks after the expiration of the contract - provided that there are no claims on our behalf (e.g. compensation payments).
